Project Overview

A temporary venue for a major milestone

Changi Airport Terminal 5’s groundbreaking required a purpose-built event setting, supported by spaces for guest arrivals, VIP holding and essential facilities. NYI’s role covered the concept, supply and construction of the aluminium tentage structures for Changi Airport Group.

The main marquee combined glass panels with ducted air-conditioning to create an enclosed ceremony space. Supporting shelters served different functions around the event site.

The Main Marquee

Engineered aluminium tentage with glass panels

The main structure provided the enclosure for the groundbreaking ceremony. Its aluminium framework, roof and glass-panelled sides formed the temporary venue within which the event setup took shape.

Ducted air-conditioning was incorporated into the marquee setup, with overhead ducts distributing air through the enclosed space.

Supporting Spaces

Shelter beyond the ceremony space

NYI’s tentage scope extended beyond the main marquee to include a VIP holding area, a drop-off shelter and shelter over the cabin toilet area. These structures supported the different needs of the event site.

The drop-off shelter provided a covered arrival area, while separate tentage provided overhead shelter around the VIP cabin toilet facilities.

Client Requirements

Construction, coordination and rain testing

The build programme included rain testing to check for leakage, as required by the client. This added a testing stage to the installation process, with time needed to assess the completed enclosure.

Alongside construction and testing, NYI handled both BCA and SCDF submissions for the project. The scope therefore involved coordination across the structure build, authority documentation and the client’s testing requirements.

Planning for the full build programme

This project required time for more than erecting the structures. Rain testing formed part of the client’s requirements and had to be accommodated within the overall preparation programme.

The Occasion

The Terminal 5 groundbreaking ceremony

The completed marquee housed the groundbreaking ceremony, with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong attending as Guest of Honour. The event brought the temporary venue into use for this milestone in Changi Airport’s development.
